Facebook is believed to be scrapping the ‘Become a fan’ button, and replacing it with a ‘like’ button.
A Facebook spokesperson said: “We’ve found that ‘Like’ is more global, easy to understand, and users are already comfortable and familiar with it, making the process of connecting with a Page more consistent with how they already interact with things on Facebook.
Personally I think this is a good thing for museums and galleries, I think that people will be more comfortable with ‘liking’ a museum, rather then being a fan.
What do you think about the change, will this get more ‘fans’ for museums?
From the looks of it they’ve already scrapped it. I’ve always like the concept of “become a fan” for pages. It’s a call to action and implies that you have a valid personal relationship with someone or something. “Like”, on the other hand, strikes me as wishy-washy and weak. But maybe that’s what FB users want.
I think this change will make things more confusing. I think the idea of being a fan is more of a commitment to the museum and just likeing something seems like something you would just do to a update. I am not a fan of the change (and I don’t like it either). =)
I don“t think is the name, i think the diference is in the services that the aplication offers.
I think it’s part of what seems to be a general M.O. of sneakiness on the part of facebook (as opposed to twitter and other social networks). Becoming a fan has become synonymous in people’s minds with receiving updates, etc. While “liking” something is a quicker, one-off thing to do with no repercussions.
Recently people have been “un-fanning” things because they didn’t want to get quite so many updates. It seems like this is a short term way for facebook to boost the number of “likers” (nee “fans”) of businesses (in our case museums). Actually, this will hurt museums on facebook in the long run when people catch on and start “unliking.” Facebook needs to do some serious work on clarity and stop obfuscating for the sake of pumping up their own numbers.
