I spent much of my time as Head of Web at the Science Museum building a strategic overview rather than constantly being in "reactive mode". All the time I was there I wanted a good overview of what other museums were doing and some help in building a series of flexible policies and strategies.

I still think this is an area which needs a lot of work, so I was delighted when Facet Publishing approached me to write a book on the subject... See http://electronicmuseum.org.uk/book/ for details...

As I say on that page, I very much see the process of writing this as a collaborative one so will be getting in touch with many cultural heritage institutions during 2010!

Good and useful idea, Jim, thanks.
Just t ocontribute, in our museum, in a more modest way than these examples, we have explained on Slideshare our journey from web 1.0 to 2.0.
We made first some international prospective on museums use of social media, then we prepared our Social Media project. After slide 26, there is the rationale, how we got started and errors to avoid.
Our detailed project is not available in English, but this ppt in English might be useful for museums planning to start their 2.0 journey.

Another useful text may be the post where it's explained how we did the presentation of the 2.0 project to the rest of museum staff
