Hi Feroze

I would imagine that if an individual was to post a copyrighted image on Facebook, then this would be an issue between the rights holder and Facebook as a platform.

As an organisation I doubt you could be held responsible for a third party ignoring the terms and conditions of Facebook and posting copyrighted images on there website (after all you don't own your fan page, Facebook do).

Having said this, I am not legally trained... so don't take my word for it.

I would email Facebook with your query and speak to a copyright lawyer.

Hope that helps.

Dear Jim,
I was a member of the audience at the Social Media and Museums seminar, and enjoyed your slide show/lecture immensely. I have come back buzzing with ideas for the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, which is where I work.

It was me who asked that pesky question related to user-submitted copyrighted material on Social Media Pages towards the end of the day. I thoroughly agree with the panel that we are simply tying ourselves in knots (unnecessarily) with all this super-vigilant-of-non-copyrighted materials stuff. A few things are bound to slip under the radar when there is a lack of resources, and no one would really care anyway. However, this is the kind of question I have been asked by trustees/board members/superiors when trying to get clearance to use these mediums... any idea where I can find some sort of legal guidelines regarding to copyrighted materials on Facebook?

Thanks!

Inspiring and witty. Excellent choice of examples.
Change has been a key word for recent years but never so fast and big as it is today. We, Museums, certainly need to speed up social networking and all that it means (organisational change, visitors'co-creation of content, user-centered offer, permanent and responsive dialogue, more cooperation among museums, and a long etc.

Definetely this post will be on my Top Ten 2009 museum papers/blogs. Thanks!
