For the fourth month I have looked at the growing number of museums on Twitter and the number of people who follow them. The latest list which contains 552 venues can be downloaded here.
MoMA leads the list for the fourth month, adding an impressive 4,589 followers since the last survey, just one month ago. The V&A in London has jumped from 12th place to 10th knocking Walker Art Centre out of the top ten by adding 1,227 new followers over the past four weeks.
As always I should say that I believe that the depth of the engagement that Twitter allows a venue to have with it’s audiences is more important then the number of followers any one museum achieves.
If you are a museum thinking of setting up an account on Twitter, you should check out my step by step guide for a Museum starting out on Twitter.

Japan Society in New York has amassed nearly 1200 followers in just under three months, with about 100 new additions each week (diligently blocking spammers, I hastened to add):

Granted we are connecting/promoting on behalf of our arts, education and business programming in addition to the Japan Society Gallery, as well as aggregating top Japan news, but that’s part of unique content strategy.
To your point about connecting to audiences, I would add that Twitter is also an invaluable and unprecedented means to connect to art colleagues around the world. To that end, thank you, Jim, for supplying so many new followees! –Shannon

Thanks for the list, but pretty disappointing that you seem to think only UK and US museums are worth listing… eurocentric much?
Would love to see the October list include museums from all over the world (there are plenty of Australian and New Zealand institutions you could include)
Hi Aussie
Thanks for comment, the search facility on Twitter is very limited so I have gradually built up the list of museums on Twitter through helpful comments and links sent to me, I certainly don’t think that ‘only UK and US museums are worth listing’.
The October list has now been published and does contain more museums, several of which are from Australia and New Zealand, but the easiest way to remedy any institutions I have missed is to leave a comment as the people above have.
Thanks, Jim

I avoid clients for whom advertising is only a marginal factor in their marketing mix. They have an awkward tendency to raid their advertising appropriations whenever they need cash for other purposes.
